Hanschen, also known as Hans, was captured in January 1984 in Chile. He and five other animals were transported to an emergency pool in Santiago, Chile in January 1984 when Zoo Duisburg failed to obtain the proper permits to import them into Germany. The six soon showed signs of a lungworm infection, and after two of the others died, Zoo Duisburg flew the other four into Germany illegally on February 14, 1984. Two died in transit, and Hanschen himself died the day after arrival from a number of ailments, including emaciation, lungworm infection, and tracheobronchitis.
